So, lets start at the beginning…I have been working on High Up Where since the initial bolt of inspiration struck me late 2010, when time allowed outside of my full time jobs working on Happy Feet Two and playing with my little girl.
The story and rhyme simmered in my mind for while before one evening when the words easily flowed on the page. The character design and rough sketches for the illustrations soon followed. Wanting to create something a little different for my daughter, my wife and I found some beautiful craft papers at Art on King in Newtown and I decided to experiment with a hand cut, paper sculpture style for the illustrations.

I liked the idea of the illustrations have a physical sense of depth, and wanted to extend this to the design of the page itself. The frames were the first elements to be cut by hand with scalpel. I was off to a good start. But then came the objects, scenery and the characters…

…to be continued.
